Khunjerab Pass: My Journey to the Pakistan -China Border
A Journey That Touches the Sky
The journey to Khunjerab Pass begins in Hunza, an approximately 87 km drive to Sost, and then another 35-40 km to Khunjerab Top. We left Karimabad Hunza at 10 AM. After a 2-hour, 50-minute drive, we covered 128 km. We arrived at 1PM. Traveling from Sost to the border. You get a pass ticket. If you’re with foreigners, you’ll have to pay $30 per head, but locals are free. This route is a road that winds through the mountains, all the way to the world’s highest border. It pours. At every turn, it feels as if nature is setting a new scene. The altitude increases and the breath slows, but the heart becomes so happy.
Snow, Wind, and the Weather of June-July
People assume it’s hot here in the summer. If you’re thinking the same, then you’re mistaken. Khunjerab is a world of its own. Even in June and July, temperatures often range between 5°C and 12°C. The wind is strong and cool. Occasionally, patches of snow can be seen on the roadside. Staying here makes you feel like this place isn’t just for viewing, but also for enduring. But there’s no need to worry; coffee and tea are also available here, which will keep you warm, but they’re a bit expensive.
World’s Highest ATM
The world’s highest ATM is located here. The presence of an ATM at such a height is proof that convenience is now available along with adventure. When you withdraw cash after spending money among the mountains, it feels like technology is also paying tribute to nature. Isn’t that amazing?
A True Home of Wildlife
Khunjerab is not just a border, but this national park is also a hidden kingdom of wildlife. During the journey, cute marmots are often seen scurrying near the road. Occasionally, an ibex or blue sheep is spotted on a distant mountain. People on duty there tell us that this is also home to the snow leopard, and one brother even showed us a video of a brown bear approaching their camp at night. The animals here live in a completely free and natural environment – without cages, without noise. Wildlife Pakistan is working here, providing them protection.
Hustles at Borders
There’s a different energy at the border. Pakistan and China’s armies are stationed on both sides. People on the Chinese side are watching us, and from here, we just wave and say hello. This small interaction says a lot – it clearly shows the love and friendship that exists between Pakistan and China. Foreigners also felt happy and accepted that the friendship between Pakistan and China is really very strong. We made a lot of videos and pictures there, laughed, enjoyed, and realized that borders only separate land, not hearts.
