These details create an unparalleled camp-life experience.
4. Each trek has a minimum of two trip leaders – one Western leader and one local leader.
5. Group size: You will NEVER see a Skardu Trekkers Expeditions team with more than 12 people.
6. Safety plans and protocols: A major difference between Skardu Trekkers and our competitors is our professional and comprehensive safety plan, along with the necessary tools to handle any emergency situation. All of our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and risk management.

The Baltoro Glacier K2 Trek involves a certain amount of risk as we venture deep into the mountains of a developing country.

All guests joining the Baltoro Glacier K2 Trek must apply for a Pakistani Trekking and Mountaineering Visa. This visa is different from the standard tourist visa, so you will not be applying for a tourist visa.

Trekking and climbing experience are critical for ensuring safety and success on the Baltoro Glacier K2 Trek. It’s recommended to have prior experience with similar high-altitude, technical climbs before attempting Baltoro Glacier K2 Trek.

Roughly 50% of our clients on the K2 Base Camp Trek are female, hailing primarily from the USA, the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Over the years, we have had solo women from more than 20 different nationalities join us on such expedition.

You will always be paired with another solo woman as hotel/tent mates. If there is no other female to pair you with due to odd numbers, you will not be required to share a tent.

The trek begins from Askole, the last inhabited village in the Shigar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, after a drive/flight to Skardu. From Askole, you walk through river valleys, moraines, up the Baltoro Glacier, and reach Concordia—the junction of Baltoro and Godwin Austen Glaciers. K2 Base Camp sits beyond that, at approx. 5,150 m, offering close views of peaks like K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I & II.

The typical round-trip trek takes 12-20 days, depending on the exact route, acclimatisation schedule, rest days, and whether you include side-trips or crosses like Gondogoro La. considered strenuous: high altitude, glacier walking, long walking days (5-8 hours usually), uneven and rocky terrain, cold nights, and possible snow. Good fitness and preparation are essential.

The best window is mid-June through August, when weather is most stable, snow is manageable, and high passes (if any) are more likely to be open. Outside this time, trail conditions worsen, snow or storms can make travel dangerous, and many services may be limited.

You’ll need a trekking & mountaineering permit from Pakistani authorities, and often special permits for regions like the Central Karakoram. Hiring a licensed local guide is required in many sections, both by law and for safety. Tour operators usually handle visas, letters of invitation, permits, and required paperwork.

·  A high-quality sleeping bag rated for cold (often down to -20°C or lower).

·  Durable trekking boots, waterproof shell & insulating layers.

·  Warm clothing for nights, and lighter gear for lower altitude days.

·  Basic medical kit, footwear protection (gaiters), sun protection, water purification, etc. Proper acclimatisation schedule is critical.

You’ll camp almost the entire trek (tents for night, mess tents for meals), except for hotel stays in Skardu or starting points. Meals are hearty, often combining local and Western styles (breakfasts, packed lunches, hot dinners). Mountain food is basic but sufficient, provided by your tour operator.
