Why Borith Lake is the Most Underrated Spot in Hunza

Borith Lake Hunza surrounded by mountains

In mid-July last year, we explored Hunza completely with our guests from Italy. The Hunza Valley is renowned worldwide for its natural beauty, culture, and mountains. However, there are some corners of Hunza that remain hidden from mass tourism. Borith Lake is one of those hidden gems—a place filled with only nature and silence. If you visit Hunza, don’t miss this place.

Where is Borith Lake located?

Borith Lake is located on a small hill above Gulmit village in Upper Hunza Gojal region. This lake isn’t far from the Karakoram Highway, but it’s still largely unexplored. From Gulmit, the lake is reached by either a jeep track or a gentle 30–40-minute uphill walk. As we travel towards Gojal, past Hunza’s popular spots like Karimabad, Baltit Fort, Altit Fort, and Attabad Lake, the landscape becomes a little rawer and more open. Borith Lake is part of this raw Hunza.

Borit Lake’s Approach and Nature

Borit Lake is a natural freshwater lake formed by melting glaciers. It’s not an artificial or commercial lake, so the environment here is very clean and calm. The lake’s combination of circular, dry brown hills, a little greenery, and open sky gives this place a unique feel. If you’re looking for a relaxing experience, consider boating and drone photography; you can make some amazing videos. Best of all, during spring and autumn, Borith Lake becomes a temporary home for migratory birds. This makes it an important destination for birdwatchers and nature researchers.

Hunza and Borith Lake’s Natural Connection

Hunza’s charm isn’t limited to its forts and lakes. This valley teaches patience, simplicity, and a slow life. It perfectly represents this philosophy. While Attabad Lake is vibrant and touristy, Borith Lake is quiet and introspective. In my opinion, Borith Lake is underrated, which isn’t a good thing; it deserves the same exposure that Attabad is getting. Coming here, it feels as if time has slowed down a bit. I don’t know, but at that moment, it feels as if the mind has been refreshed. The world’s worries disappear here, and that’s exactly what we want. And what would happen if we could have tea and chips at this time?

Best Time to Visit Borith Lake

June to August is the best time to visit. The weather is pleasant, and the greenery is at its peaks. The area can get very cold in winter, and the lake can sometimes freeze partially. Therefore, we do not recommend winter for tourists.

What activities can you do?

  • Borith Lake is best for those who want to enjoy peace and nature.
  • Landscape and reflection photography
  • Bird watching
  • Light hiking and walking
  • Camping under the open sky
  • Self-reflection, writing, or simply enjoying the silence.

There are no water sports or loud activities here, and that is the beauty of this place.

Why visit Borith Lake?

If you want to see Hunza not just as a tourist destination but as an experience, Borith Lake is a must-visit. This place offers you the opportunity to spend time away from the crowds, close to nature, and with yourself.

This place is not just meant to be seen, it’s meant to be felt — and Skardu Trekkers is here to guide you and take you all the way there.
