Where is Hoper Glacier?

Hoper Glacier is located in Nagar Valley, which is located on the other side of Hunza River. This glacier is formed by joining Bualtar and Barpu glaciers, and is a part of Hispar Glacier system. Hoper village, from where this glacier can be seen, is about 45 minutes drive from Nagar Khas. It also takes only one hour from Karimabad in Hunza.

Village from where glacier is visible

When you reach Hoper, you feel the silence of this village. Such silence which gives you peace. Hoper village is built on the slopes of the mountains, from where you get a full view of the glacier. There are white lakes of snow from door to door, sliding down into the valley, and snow-capped peaks below. If you go in spring, the vegetable fields and apricot trees create a beautiful contrast with the snow on the glacier.

Why is this glacier special?

To reach most of the glaciers in Pakistan, trekking and planning is required which is tough work and quite risky too. But in Hoper, you can reach the glacier by doing a short walk. This is the best thing about this place. It is a perfect place for everyone, be it family, solo traveler or anyone who loves adventure.

But the true magic of the glacier is felt only when you stand on it and listen to its sounds. The movement, breaking and slight grumbling of the snow is truly a thrilling experience.

Meeting of the river of snow

Hoper Glacier is not just a glacier. It meets Barpu to form Hispar Glacier. And if you are fond of trekking, then the trail to Hispar Pass starts from here, which connects Nagar to Biafo Glacier of Baltistan. This is one of the longest glacial trek routes in the world, apart from poles.

Smiles of the villagers

Due to the glacier, the weather in Hoper can be cold, but the people here are warm at heart. Most of the people speak rudely or in a bad way. They work in their fields, and tell a story or two to the traveler along with tea.

Talk to an elderly person and he will tell you the condition of the glacier for the last 40-50 years – how it grew, when it grew, which part broke. For them, the glacier is not a static place, but a living creature which has been living with them for years.

When should I go?

For any trip in Gilgit Baltistan, the best time is from May to October. It is full of flowers in spring and golden in autumn. In winter season, this area is covered with snow and the paths become difficult.

Some important tips
