Bagrot Valley Travel Guide 2025: How to Get There

A Hidden Treasure Just Beyond Gilgit

When I went on a Gilgit trip, honestly I had no idea that Bagrot Valley would be so deeply etched in my memories. This valley is approximately 35-40 kms away from Gilgit and takes about 1.5 hours by jeep – to reach here you have to go via Danyor, Ishkandas, Jalalabad and then take this route. The road is better and lovely. While walking, we reach the first village of Bagrot, Sankar, which is very lovely. The weather was lovely and the trek along with the mountains gives you a glimpse of the Diran peak.

The Land of Glaciers & Peaks

This valley is also called the “Land of Glaciers”, and this title is actually made for this place. I explored the Haramosh glacier trail – the trek was tough, but the more I moved forward, the more I felt the energy of the glaciers. From Bagrot you can see 3 mountains whose height is more than 7000m, which includes Rakaposhi and Diran peaks and Haramosh – I have never seen such close and grand view anywhere else.

Culture, Simplicity & Orchard Life

This valley is not limited to just natural beauty – the people here are also the essence of this place. These people who call themselves Shina are very humble and hospitable. I went to the house of a local family, who welcomed me with dry fruits and tea. Their life is simple, but there is a charm in that simplicity which is missing in today’s modern tourist towns. Talking to them, I felt like I was seeing the real face of Gilgit-Baltistan. The apples, mulberries and apricots here are naturally sweet in taste during summers. I will always remember the experience of visiting the orchard. An aunty fed me a freshly picked apricot, which was so soft and sweet that it seemed to have been formed by the winds of the straight glacier.

Best season to visit

May to September is the best season of this place. There is greenery all around, ripe fruits and clean air. Autumn is also beautiful – with golden leaves. In winter, this area becomes quite isolated due to snowfall. But the most special thing is that Bagrot Valley is not a tourist spot, it is an emotion. A place where you hear the voice of your inner self. Coming here, it felt like I was not just exploring a valley, I was experiencing myself.
