Overview

Welcome to the Thalle La Trek, a journey curated by Skardu Trekkers to immerse you in the natural beauty and history of Baltistan. This trek takes you through the picturesque Thalle Lungma valley, a verdant expanse that extends northwest from the Shyok River. Located 15 km west of Khaplu and 85 km east of Skardu, the valley serves as a corridor to some of the region’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

The Thalle Lungma valley splits into two branches at its upper end. The northern route leads to the remote and rarely crossed Tusserpo La, standing at a formidable 5,084 meters. This path is ideal for those seeking a more challenging and less-trodden adventure. On the other hand, the southern route leads to the more accessible Thalle La at 4,572 meters. This pass is easier to traverse and connects to the Bauma Lungma valley, which runs southwest towards the historic Shigar valley.

Thalle La holds a unique place in the history of Baltistan. From 1891 to 1947, the British utilized this route between Skardu and Khaplu for its ample grazing lands, which provided essential sustenance for their pack animals. Today, Thalle La is one of the few non-glaciated passes in the region, making it an ideal choice for backpackers and trekkers of all skill levels.

Our trek offers a flexible itinerary, allowing you to traverse the pass in either direction. The Shigar trailhead is easily accessible from Skardu, making it a convenient starting or ending point for your journey. Many trekkers opt to use the Thalle La as a return route from the more remote areas of Hushe or Khaplu, providing a varied and enriching experience.

While the trek is considered one of the easier routes in Baltistan, early-season trekkers should be prepared for the possibility of significant snow on Thalle La’s east side, with even more challenging conditions on Tusserpo La. Regardless of when you choose to embark on this trek, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views, rich cultural experiences, and the unparalleled beauty of the Baltistan region.

Join Skardu Trekkers for the Thalle La Trek, and let us guide you through a landscape where history and nature intertwine, offering an adventure that is both accessible and unforgettable.
