Overview
The Spantik Base Camp Trek offers a remarkable trekking experience in the Karakoram range of Pakistan. With an altitude of 7,027 meters, Spantik Peak, once an elusive destination, has now captured the interest of many adventure enthusiasts due to its relatively low technical difficulty and accessible route. Located just a few days’ journey from Skardu, this trek stands out for its unique appeal, especially since it is less crowded compared to the K2 region, allowing trekkers to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Karakoram wilderness.
The journey to Spantik Base Camp features moderate terrain, becoming slightly steeper as you approach the base camp. The trail is a mix of glaciers and verdant pastures, surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks. The adventure begins in Skardu, where you embark on a 4×4 jeep ride to Arando village in the Shigar Valley. This drive, passing through the lush green landscapes of Shigar alongside the Basha River, is an adventure in itself. Arando is the final village before the trek commences, marking the end of human settlement and the beginning of the true wilderness experience.
The trek to Balocho camp traverses through pastures and rugged terrain, with views of several peaks ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 meters. The final two days of the trek are spent navigating glaciers until you reach the Spantik Base Camp.
Spantik Peak, nestled between the Shigar and Nagar valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan, is revered by mountaineers and trekkers alike. Known by various names on its different sides, the peak’s northwest face, called “Ghinesh” in the Brushaski language, translates to “Golden Mountain” or “Queen,” and is widely recognized as the “Golden Peak.” The southeastern face, viewed from the Shigar Valley, retains the name Spantik, which means “High Altitude Pasture” in the Balti language. The base camp trek and expeditions are most commonly undertaken from the Shigar Valley due to its easier access and terrain.
