Shaigiri Peak, located in the westernmost part of the Himalayas, sits next to the renowned Nanga Parbat. The peak rises dramatically from the southern Rupal Valley, reaching an elevation of nearly 5700 meters, standing about 2000 meters above the valley’s base.
To the east of Shaigiri Peak is Rupal Peak, while the west is dominated by the vast Rupal Glacier descending from Nanga Parbat. Shaigiri Peak’s striking pyramidal shape, though overshadowed by the towering 8125-meter summit of Nanga Parbat, is an impressive sight. Despite its lesser-known status, the peak offers climbers and trekkers breathtaking views and a unique climbing experience.
The peak is visible from various points in the Rupal Valley. Its base camp, situated at 3655 meters, is a popular destination for trekkers, mountaineers, and shepherds. From this camp, visitors can enjoy magnificent views of the Rupal Face and Mazeno Wall of Nanga Parbat.
Shaigiri Peak is accessible from the Astore Valley. Most treks to Shaigiri, Mazeno Pass, the Around Nanga Parbat trek, and the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat trek start from Tarashing, which is easily reached from Astore via a 4X4 drive. From Gilgit, you can drive to Astore, making the journey to this stunning peak more convenient.
One appealing feature for climbers regarding Shaigiri Peak is that no permit is needed. The jeep drive through the narrow Astore gorge offers unique and scenic views of the southern panorama of the Nanga Parbat mountain range. A two-day trek from Tarashing village leads to the beautiful base camp of Shaigiri Peak. Here, a climb to the 5690-meter summit provides magnificent views down the entire Rupal Valley.
Trekking through the scenic Rupal Valley with Skardu Trekkers, you will meet locals in their summer settlements, enjoying fresh water, firewood, and superb views of the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat.
Shaigiri Peak is a trekking peak in Pakistan’s western Himalayas, rising precipitously from the south end of the Rupal Valley. Despite its impressive height and unique pyramid shape, Shaigiri Peak is greatly overshadowed by its giant neighbor to the north, Nanga Parbat.
Though the Shaigiri Peak itself is seldom climbed, its northern base camp at 3655 meters is a summer destination for hikers, trekkers, mountaineers, and local herdsmen. Shaigiri Peak is highly visible from most parts of the Rupal Valley. From Shaigiri’s base camp, one can see Nanga Parbat’s Rupal Face and the eastern end of the Mazeno Wall.
Shaigiri Peak is accessible via the Astore Valley, which opens to the great Indus River south of Gilgit. Most of these treks to Shaigiri, the Mazeno Pass, and Nanga Parbat’s Rupal Face are staged from the remote village of Tarashing, which is reached by jeep from Astore. Astore can be reached by car from Gilgit, a major town on the Karakoram Highway.
