Overview

Passu Sar, also known as Passu Peak, stands at an impressive 7,284 meters and is a prominent summit in the Batura Muztagh sub-range of the Karakoram. Located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, west of the Hunza Valley, it is the highest point of the Passu massif, which also includes Passu Diar (or “Passu II”). Approximately 7 kilometers east of Batura Sar, Passu Peak offers climbers a thrilling and challenging ascent in the heart of the Karakoram.

The peak was first successfully climbed on August 7, 1994, by Max Wallner, Dirk Naumann, Ralf Lehmann, and Volker Wurnig.

The climb from base camp to camp 1 is demanding, involving treacherous crevasses and steep ice walls. From the advanced base camp (ABC) to camp 1, climbers must carefully secure ropes and navigate challenging terrain. With the complexity of this route, a minimum of 500 to 700 meters of rope, ice screws, and snow tubes is essential. Safety is paramount, with team members roped together to tackle the glacier. Ladders are also recommended to manage crevasses that may widen as the climb progresses.

For those looking to undertake this expedition, Skardu Trekkers stands out as a reliable and experienced tour operator. Their seasoned guides and well-coordinated support teams ensure that adventurers are well-equipped for the technical challenges of Passu Peak, making the climb both safer and more manageable.

As you ascend, you’ll witness sweeping panoramas that include nearby summits like Batura Sar and Passu Diar. The sheer scale and majesty of these peaks, framed by vast glaciers and valleys, provide an unforgettable backdrop throughout the expedition
  • Challenging High-Altitude Climb Standing at 7,284 meters, Passu Sar is a serious test of endurance, strength, and mountaineering skill. This high-altitude climb requires navigating complex ice walls, crevasses, and glacier terrain. The ascent from base camp to the summit involves technical challenges that will push climbers to their limits. Each camp, especially camp 1 and the advanced base camp, presents a unique challenge, with the steep ice walls demanding focus and precision. Climbers must rope together, work as a team, and expertly handle ice screws, snow tubes, and crevasse ladders.
  • Historic First Ascent and Legacy On August 7, 1994, a team consisting of Max Wallner, Dirk Naumann, Ralf Lehmann, and Volker Wurnig made history by being the first to successfully summit Passu Sar. Their achievement has cemented the peak’s place in the annals of mountaineering history. As you ascend, you will be retracing their footsteps, experiencing the same awe and challenge they faced during their pioneering climb.
  • The Beauty of the Hunza Valley As you journey toward Passu Sar, you’ll pass through the famed Hunza Valley, known for its unparalleled natural beauty. Nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Karakoram, the valley is a treasure trove of pristine landscapes, including terraced fields, crystal-clear rivers, and charming villages. The valley’s serene environment and vibrant culture offer a peaceful contrast to the rugged climb that lies ahead.
  • Crossings and Ice Walls One of the most thrilling aspects of the Passu Sar expedition is navigating the massive glacier systems that lie between base camp and camp 1. This includes scaling imposing ice walls, which not only require technical skill but also offer some of the most visually striking moments of the trek. As you traverse the glacier, surrounded by deep crevasses and towering ice formations, the sense of adventure is palpable. The glacier crossings are a true highlight for mountaineers seeking an adrenaline-fueled experience.
  • Rope Skills and Team Dynamics The expedition calls for expert rope skills and close coordination among team members. With each step, you’re enveloped in the raw beauty of the mountains, glaciers, and alpine landscapes, far removed from civilization. The serenity and isolation add to the allure of this expedition.
  • Technical Climb to the Summit The final push to the summit of Passu Sar is a deeply rewarding experience. The ascent is technically challenging, requiring climbers to tackle steep ridges, ice fields, and exposed sections. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit, after overcoming the physical and mental demands of the climb, is incomparable. From the top, you’ll be treated to 360-degree views of the Karakoram Range, with towering peaks, vast glaciers, and remote valleys stretching out beneath you—a true reward for the effort it takes to get there.
  • A Unique Climbing Adventure in the Karakoram Unlike the more frequented peaks in the region, Passu Sar remains a hidden gem for climbers seeking a unique and less-traveled route. The combination of technical challenge, breathtaking scenery, and the history of its first ascent makes it a standout expedition in the Karakoram.
