Overview

The Chogolisa Expedition, presented by Skardu Trekkers, offers an unparalleled journey into the heart of Pakistan’s Karakoram range, leading to the majestic Chogolisa Peak. At 7,665 meters, Chogolisa, often called “Bride Peak” due to its distinctive, veil-like snow-covered ridges, stands as a testament to the rugged beauty and grandeur of the Karakoram. The expedition not only provides climbers with the opportunity to summit a challenging peak, but it also offers a deep dive into the rich history and dramatic landscapes of this iconic region.

Chogolisa is renowned for its imposing presence near Concordia, one of the most famous glacier junctions in the world. Concordia offers a 360-degree panorama of some of the highest peaks on Earth, including K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum massif. This alone makes the approach to Chogolisa an awe-inspiring experience, with trekkers and climbers treated to views that few places on the planet can rival.

Historically, Chogolisa holds a significant place in mountaineering lore. In 1957, the legendaryAustrian mountaineers Hermann Buhl and Kurt Diemberger attempted the peak. Buhl tragically lost his life during the descent, adding to the mountain’s mystique and the challenges associated with its ascent. Since then, climbers from around the world have been drawn to Chogolisa’s unique combination of technical difficulty and breathtaking beauty. The mountain features long, knife-edged ridges, vast snowfields, and deep crevasses that test even the most seasoned alpinists. It demands not just technical expertise but also physical and mental resilience to navigate its high-altitude challenges.

The Chogolisa Expedition by  Skardu Trekkers typically begins in the vibrant city of Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. From there, climbers travel through the Shigar Valley, making their way to Askole, the last village before entering the wild expanse of the Baltoro Glacier. The journey to Base Camp follows the iconic Baltoro Glacier route, passing through camps at Paiyu and Urdukas, with plenty of opportunities to marvel at the immense rock towers like Trango,Uli Biaho, and the towering Masherbrum.

The expedition offers climbers a carefully planned ascent, with Skardu Trekkers providing experienced guides, porters, and comprehensive logistical support. With acclimatization days and strategic high-altitude camps, the itinerary ensures that climbers are fully prepared for the final summit push. The technical challenges on Chogolisa, including steep ice faces, complex glacier crossings, and exposed ridges, require strong mountaineering skills, but the reward is an unforgettable experience on one of the most beautiful peaks in the Karakoram.

Skardu Trekkers places a strong emphasis on safety, ensuring that all climbers are equipped with the right gear and training for the climb. The support staff includes high-altitude porters and experienced mountaineers, all of whom are familiar with the mountain’s challenges. Additionally, the team is committed to sustainable trekking practices, ensuring that the pristine beauty of Chogolisa and its surrounding environment is preserved for future generations.

For those seeking a peak that combines history, challenge, and spectacular scenery, the Chogolisa Expeditionis an unforgettable adventure. Skardu Trekkers’ expertise, coupled with the grandeur of the Karakoram, creates an expedition that is as rewarding as it is demanding, offering climbers the chance to stand atop a mountain that few have summited, all while immersed in the raw, untamed beauty of the world’s greatest mountain range.

Trek Highlights

  • Chogolisa Peak (7,665m): Standing as one of the Karakoram’s most visually striking mountains, Chogolisa is often referred to as "Bride Peak" because of its snow-covered ridges resembling a flowing bridal veil. The peak’s pristine, untouched snowfields and sharp ridgelines make it a climber's dream, offering a challenging ascent that combines technical skill with breathtaking beauty.
  • Majestic Karakoram Journey: The expedition begins in Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram, and travels through the remote Shigar Valley to Askole, the last inhabited village before entering the wilderness. The trek follows the famous Baltoro Glacier route, passing through key camps such as Paiyu and Urdukas, offering captivating views of the region's most iconic mountains, including Trango Towers, Cathedral Peaks, and Masherbrum. This scenic journey alone is one of the most sought-after trekking experiences in the world, with vast glaciers and towering peaks on all sides.
  • Concordia – The Throne Room of the God: One of the most spectacular points on the expedition is reaching Concordia, a glacier junction regarded as one of the best viewpoints in the world. Here, climbers are surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of some of the highest and most famous mountains on Earth, including K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum massif. Standing at Concordia, with these mighty peaks rising in all directions, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
  • Historical Significance: Chogolisa is steeped in mountaineering history, particularly the 1957 attempt by Hermann Buhl and Kurt Diemberger. Buhl, one of the greatest climbers of his time, tragically fell to his death during the descent, adding a profound sense of history and reverence to any modern expedition. Chogolisa has since drawn climbers seeking not only the physical challenge but also the deep historical connection to mountaineering’s golden age.
  • Technical Climbing Challenges: Chogolisa presents a series of technical obstacles that test the skills and endurance of even the most experienced climbers. The mountain’s steep ice faces, knife-edged ridges, and the presence of deep crevasses demand a high level of proficiency in glacier navigation, ice climbing, and high-altitude mountaineering. The summit approach is notoriously exposed, requiring precise footwork and careful planning to overcome the ridge’s sharp drops and extreme weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the views and sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit are unmatched.
  • Panoramic Views from the Summit: For those fortunate enough to summit, the rewards are beyond description. From the top of Chogolisa, climbers can gaze upon the towering peaks of the Karakoram, including K2 to the north, and the endless expanse of snow-covered mountains and glaciers that make this one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on Earth.

Their deep knowledge of the region, combined with their commitment to safety, ensures that climbers have the best chance of success on this demanding peak. The team’s familiarity with the mountain’s challenges, weather patterns, and technical routes makes them invaluable partners in this adventure.
  • Remote and Isolated Wilderness: One of the most compelling aspects of the Chogolisa Expedition is its sense of remoteness. After leaving Askole, climbers enter a realm of complete isolation, surrounded only by the towering peaks and vast glaciers of the Karakoram. This sense of wilderness and solitude is a key part of the experience, offering climbers the rare opportunity to disconnect from the world and fully immerse themselves in one of the planet’s most untouched and dramatic landscapes.
  • A True Mountaineering Challenge: For those seeking a peak that is both physically demanding and visually stunning, the Chogolisa Expedition presents an ideal choice. Combining history, high-altitude technical climbing, and the untouched beauty of the Karakoram, it offers climbers a unique opportunity to summit a peak that few have attempted. A thrilling jeep ride awaits today as the Chogolisa Expedition moves deeper into the Karakoram. The route offers a glimpse into the lives of the locals and spectacular views as you cross the Braldu River multiple times on your way to the camp.

Today’s trek takes you through undulating terrain towards Paiyu, where the first major mountains of the Chogolisa Expedition come into view. This challenging but rewarding walk is filled with magnificent sights, including the mighty Baltoro Glacier and distant glimpses of the Cathedral and Trango Towers. These days are dedicated to the climbing portion of the Chogolisa Expedition. Over several weeks, climbers will make gradual progress towards the summit, with a mix of preparation, rest, and climbing days. The technical challenges of Chogolisa will test your endurance and skill, but the reward is the potential to stand atop one of the most majestic peaks in the Karakoram.

The descent begins as the Chogolisa Expedition retraces its steps back through the spectacular landscape. These days are filled with reflection on the accomplishment of the climb, as you move back through the glaciers and valleys to Jhola Camp.
