Overview

The Amin Brak Expedition offers a thrilling challenge to climbers aiming to conquer one of the most technical rock formations in the Karakoram Range. Amin Brak, or the Great Tower, stands at 5,850 meters in the Nangma Valley of Ghanche District, and it is renowned for its imposing granite walls. Unlike many peaks in the region, this expedition does not require extended trekking, and climbers can reach the base in just three days from Skardu, making it more accessible.

Nangma Valley, often called the “Yosemite of Pakistan,” remains a relatively untouched area in the Karakoram, filled with magnificent granite towers that beckon rock climbing enthusiasts from around the world. Despite its secluded nature, the valley has started gaining attention after a Spanish team’s attempt on Amin Brak in 1995. The valley, brimming with unclimbed peaks, is a paradise for adventurers seeking new challenges.

The granite wall of Amin Brak is often considered even more technical than the Trango Towers, making it a prime destination for those looking to push the limits of their climbing abilities. Its first successful ascent was made in 1999 by Spanish climbers Silvia Vidal, Pep Masip, and Miguel Puigdomenech, who named the peak after their cook’s son, Amin.

Skardu Trekkers offers a chance for climbers to experience this remarkable expedition, providing expert guidance and support throughout the journey. For those looking to tackle one of the most demanding climbs in the Karakoram, the Amin Brak Expedition promises an unforgettable adventure amidst the untamed beauty of the Nangma Valley.

Trek Highlights

  • Amin Brak, also known as the Great Tower, is a stunning granite formation located in the heart of the Karakoram Range. Standing at 5,850 meters, it offers one of the most exhilarating and technical rock climbing experiences in the region. The massive granite wall of Amin Brak is a magnet for climbers looking to test their skills on some of the most challenging rock faces in the world.
  • The towering Amin Brak is located in the secluded Nangma Valley, a hidden gem in the Ghanche District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. This region is lesser-known compared to other areas of the Karakoram but boasts an impressive array of towering rock faces, perfect for adventurers seeking untouched climbing terrain.
  • At a height of 5,850 meters, Amin Brak presents an awe-inspiring granite wall that stretches skyward. Unlike other peaks in the Karakoram that feature mixed terrain, Amin Brak is entirely granite, providing a unique and consistent climbing challenge from base to summit.
  • One of the highlights of the Amin Brak expedition is its accessibility. Since it is located in an open zone, climbers do not need any special permits or pay any royalty fees, making this an appealing destination for rock climbers looking for high-altitude, technical ascents without bureaucratic hurdles.
  • Unlike many expeditions in the Karakoram that require long treks to reach base camps, Amin Brak is just a three-day journey from Skardu. This ease of access makes the expedition less logistically complicated and allows climbers to focus more on their climb than the approach.
  • Nangma Valley has earned the nickname “Yosemite of Pakistan” due to its breathtaking granite formations and rock walls. The valley is a secluded paradise for rock climbers, offering numerous unclimbed and unexplored towers. Despite its potential, it remains one of the least explored regions in the Karakoram, making it ideal for climbers seeking solitude and new challenges.
  • Nangma Valley is a true haven for rock climbers. Apart from Amin Brak, the valley is home to many other towering rock formations, many of which remain unclimbed. This unexplored potential is a significant draw for adventurous climbers aiming to be the first to summit new routes.
  • Climbers who have attempted Amin Brak often describe it as more technically demanding than the famed Trango Towers. With its extended granite wall and steep gradients, Amin Brak presents a climb that tests the endurance and skill of even the most seasoned climbers, setting it apart as one of the most challenging climbs in the Karakoram.
  • What makes Amin Brak unique is its composition. The entire climb is on solid granite, offering a consistent technical challenge throughout the ascent. This makes it a dream climb for those looking to master the intricacies of granite rock climbing at high altitudes
  • The first successful ascent of Amin Brak was made by a Spanish team consisting of Silvia Vidal, Pep Masip, and Miguel Puigdomenech in 1999. Their successful climb marked the tower’s first known summit, bringing international attention to this previously nameless rock formation.
  • The Amin Brak expedition offers a distinct experience compared to other Karakoram climbs. With its short approach trek and highly technical rock climbing challenge, it’s perfect for climbers who prefer less time spent on the approach and more time on the vertical face of the peak.
  • Skardu Trekkers offers expert guidance for climbers looking to take on the Amin Brak expedition. With years of experience in organizing expeditions in the Karakoram, Skardu Trekkers ensures that climbers have the support, local knowledge, and logistical help needed for a safe and successful ascent.
  • The Amin Brak expedition is not for the faint-hearted. Its towering granite face, high altitude, and extreme technicality make it a true test for elite climbers. For those looking to push the boundaries of their climbing abilities, Amin Brak offers the ultimate challenge in one of the most remote and stunning regions on earth.

A representative from Skardu Trekkers will be waiting at the airport to greet you and escort you to a partner hotel near the Margalla Hills. Be sure to provide your flight details 3-4 days before your arrival for smooth coordination. After check-in, you can relax and unwind at the hotel. Any remaining payments will be processed either today or upon arrival in Skardu, depending on the time of your arrival. All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during your stay.

On the second day of the Amin Brak Expedition, we will take an early morning flight to Skardu. The flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges, with Nanga Parbat among the highlights. Upon arrival at Skardu Airport, a team member from Skardu Trekkers will meet you and transfer you to the hotel, where you can rest and enjoy your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). If time allows, we will explore the local bazaar and outskirts of Skardu city.

Today, we will finalize our preparations for the Amin Brak Expedition. After breakfast, we will review and check all climbing equipment. If anything is missing, we can buy or rent the necessary gear locally. Once preparations are complete, we will take an acclimatization hike to the Kharpocho Fort, which offers panoramic views of the Indus River and Skardu city. The hotel will provide all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

Early in the morning, we will set out for Kanday Village, the final village en route to the Amin Brak Expedition. The journey takes us through the scenic Khaplu Valley and lasts approximately 5-7 hours by jeep. After lunch in Khaplu, we will continue to Kanday, where the porters, climbing assistants, and kitchen crew will join us. Upon arrival, Skardu Trekkers will set up tents and serve tea with snacks. Dinner will be provided in the mess tent, and we will camp overnight in fully serviced tents.

We will start our trek to Minglu Broq, a beautiful section of the Nangma Valley. The trek offers a serene atmosphere as we gradually move toward the base of Amin Brak. We will camp in tents for the night, with meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) provided along the way.

Today, we will reach the Amin Brak Base Camp after a steady trek through the stunning Nangma Valley. Our base camp will be set up here, and we will rest in preparation for the upcoming climbing days. Tents will be provided for accommodation, with meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) served at camp.

The core of the Amin Brak Expedition begins as we spend the next several days attempting the ascent. This period will be dedicated to climbing, acclimatization, and weather-dependent progress toward the summit of Amin Brak. Meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be prepared at base camp, and accommodation will be in tents.

After our successful climb, we will trek back to Kanday Village and drive through the scenic Khaplu Valley on our way to Skardu. Upon reaching Skardu, we can relax and celebrate the achievements of the expedition. We will stay at a hotel with all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) provided.

We will either fly back to Islamabad via PIA or, in the event of a flight cancellation, drive to Chilas. This will depend on weather conditions. Accommodation will be at a hotel with meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) included.

This day is reserved for any potential delays. If we had to drive to Chilas, we would complete the drive to Islamabad today. Otherwise, we will spend the day resting and reflecting on the Amin Brak Expedition. Accommodation will be at a hotel, and all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are provided.

On the final day, participants will depart for their respective home countries, bringing the Amin Brak Expedition to a close. Skardu Trekkers will ensure all arrangements for your airport transfer are smooth and timely. Meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided until your departure.

FAQs

What is Amin Brak, and why is it famous?

Amin Brak, also referred to as the Great Tower, is an impressive granite rock formation standing at 5,850 meters in the Nangma Valley of Pakistan’s Karakoram Range. This peak gained prominence among rock climbers because of its sheer vertical granite walls that present a highly technical challenge. The first successful ascent of Amin Brak was in 1999 by a Spanish team, and the climb was considered a milestone in technical rock climbing. What makes this climb particularly famous is its uninterrupted vertical rock face and the demanding nature of the climb, which is often described as being more challenging than the iconic Trango Towers. The valley itself, sometimes called the Yosemite of Pakistan, is an unspoiled haven for rock climbers, offering plenty of unclimbed peaks alongside the magnificent Amin Brak.

Do I need a permit to climb Amin Brak?

One of the key advantages of the Amin Brak Expedition is that no special climbing permits or royalty fees are required to summit this peak, unlike many other expeditions in the Karakoram region. This is because Amin Brak is located in an “open zone,” which allows climbers to ascend without needing to go through the often time-consuming and expensive process of obtaining official permits. However, climbers should still inform local authorities, and Skardu Trekkers will handle all logistical aspects, ensuring compliance with any local regulations.

What is the best time of year to attempt the Amin Brak Expedition?

The ideal window for attempting the Amin Brak Expedition is between May and August. This period offers the most stable weather conditions in the Nangma Valley, with less likelihood of snow or harsh weather impacting the climb. The summer months are optimal because they provide relatively warmer temperatures, which are crucial for rock climbing at high altitudes. Climbers can expect clearer skies and better visibility, making it easier to navigate the complex terrain of Amin Brak. However, even during this period, weather conditions can be unpredictable in the Karakoram, so climbers should be prepared for sudden changes.

How difficult is the Amin Brak Expedition?

The Amin Brak Expedition is renowned for its technical difficulty. Climbers often describe the route as one of the most complex in the Karakoram due to its sheer vertical walls made of solid granite. The ascent requires advanced rock climbing skills, as well as familiarity with high-altitude climbing techniques. The towering walls of Amin Brak offer little room for error, with long and sustained pitches that test endurance, technique, and mental fortitude. Many climbers consider this climb to be more demanding than the famous Trango Towers, as the rock is a continuous slab of granite from base to summit.

How do I reach the base camp of Amin Brak?

After arriving in Islamabad, the journey to the base camp of Amin Brak begins with a flight to Skardu, which offers stunning aerial views of the Karakoram range, including Nanga Parbat. From Skardu, a 5-7 hour jeep drive will take you through the scenic Khaplu Valley to Kanday Village, where porters and support staff join the expedition. The trek to base camp takes two days and passes through the pristine Nangma Valley, home to several other unclimbed peaks and rock formations. This trek, though relatively short compared to other Karakoram expeditions, serves as an acclimatization period.

Is altitude sickness a concern during the climb?

As with any high-altitude expedition, altitude sickness is a significant concern. Amin Brak sits at 5,850 meters, and without proper acclimatization, climbers may experience symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, or even more serious complications like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). The itinerary is designed to include gradual altitude gain, rest days, and acclimatization hikes to help mitigate the risk. Skardu Trekkers’ experienced guides will monitor the health of all climbers and ensure that the pace of the climb is manageable.

What kind of fitness level is required for this expedition?

The Amin Brak Expedition demands a very high level of physical fitness. Climbers need to be in peak condition, with excellent endurance, strength, and stamina. The climb involves long days on the rock face, requiring not only climbing skills but also the ability to endure the altitude and physical exertion over several weeks. Pre-expedition training, including cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and technical climbing practice, is highly recommended.
