Borith Lake – Hunza’s Ultimate Escape for Nature and Adventure

Borith lake is Situated at a height of almost 2,600 meters in the Gojal region of Upper Hunza, Borith Lake is a place where time stops. Calm water, glaciers below and mountains all around – this lake is for those who want to spend time away from the crowd and with nature. Absolute peace. It is not only a lake that entertains you but along the way you can also see many beautiful lakes and tunnels that make your trip more memorable.

What is special about Borith Lake

  • Welcome Point for Migratory Birds
From March to June and September to November, migratory birds come here – geese, ducks and swans coming from Central Asia stay in this lake. But even in the rest of the months, the lake wins hearts with its peace and beauty.
  • Easy Trek and Short Jeep Ride
If you are not a trekker, you can easily reach the lake – a 2-3 hour walk from Gulmit or a short jeep ride from Hussaini Village is enough. But if you are coming from Skardu, it can take up to 7 hours. And if you want adventure, you can go further to Ghulkin Glacier or Passu Glacier.
  • Culture and stories
There are many people living near Borith Lake. Earlier this place was their summer grazing ground. It is said that even Mir (ruler) of Hunza used to come here for rest. Even today, the small guesthouse and local people welcome you happily.
  • Night under Stars
When the moon comes out at night, the lake looks even more magical. Camping or just watching the stars – both have their own solace.

Before planning a trip

  • Best Season: April to October. March-June is the best time for bird-watching.
  • How to go: Drive from Gilgit to Gulmit, then take a trek or jeep from Hussaini.
  • Stay: Basic guesthouses or homestays in Gulmit. You can also camp on a budget.
  • Reminder: Bring back whatever you buy. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the lake clean.

    Lutz Lingener

I had a great time on the Nanga Parbat trekking tour, exactly as I had imagined. Afzal was an excellent tour guide, everything worked with a bit of flexibility. Now I’m back in Islamabad and I’m sure I will be back for K2 base camp.
